Piran salt is recognized worldwide for its natural origin and unique properties that set it apart from other types of salt.
Piran Salt: Price
As for the price, sea salt is usually cheaper since its extraction directly from seawater is more mass-produced and industrial. This method of production takes place on concrete or asphalt surfaces with the help of large excavators and other machinery. The salt is harvested once a season. The extraction of Piran salt is much more intensive and demanding, both in terms of manipulation (preparing the basins and water, as well as the harvesting process) and in terms of time.
The entire process is carried out manually and only with wooden tools. At no stage of the salt formation is a machine present, only nature and human using the force of their body. Salt is harvested every other day. From the beginning to the end of the season, the salt worker must be present in the field every day, all day long. Work takes place from early morning hours (6 am – 7 am) to late evening hours (9 pm – 10 pm). If the season is long, the day already shortens, and sometimes salt is collected with a miner’s lamp on the head, as it is already dark at that time. The water must touch the basin several times a day, be stirred, monitor the level, clean the basin,…
For every kilogram of salt, the salt worker manually moves it 3 times – first, the salt must be gathered at the edge of the basin, then it must be loaded onto a cart with a shovel, and finally, it must be spread onto the draining area in the same way. Through the saltworker’s shoulders, elbows, and back, this way, every season, from 150 to 300 tons of salt pass, which always leaves consequences. Hence, Piran salt is somewhat more expensive due to its quality, rarity, manual production, and traditional extraction methods, but worth every cent because of its quality and unique taste. The price of Piran salt is linked not only to its quality but also to its history, tradition, and the method of salt production itself.
Piran Salt: How to recognize high-quality salt?
We can recognize high-quality Piran salt by its color, ranging from pure white to a delicate pink, fine granulation, and gentle taste. High-quality salt differs from lower-quality alternatives in its unique texture and rich mineral taste.

This gives Piran salt a unique mineral composition and a milder taste compared to regular sea salt. Piran salt is recognized worldwide for its high-quality standards and unique properties that set it apart from other types of salt.
Piran Salt with Herbs:
The salt we use is also hand-harvested in the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park. The salt is non-iodized and unrefined – just as it is collected in the salt pan. We add various blends of wild herbs to this salt, which are hand-harvested along the Adriatic coast. The herbs are hand-picked, naturally dried, hand-mixed, packaged, and labeled. A special feature of our blends is also the inclusion of immortelle (smilje). Immortelle is a rare herb with exceptional properties and a captivating aroma. We use wild, naturally growing immortelle.
The fact that the herbs are wild is crucial. The reason is that plants that are wild and native grow where the conditions are ideal for them. In the case of immortelle, this means that the substrate must be rocky, dry, close to the sea, with plenty of sunlight. Such a plant develops extremely intense essential oils, which are also the medicinal and aromatic part of the plant that we want and seek. All products are, from start to finish, 100% handmade in Izola, Slovenia.
